Umar Akmal, a Pakistani cricketer, defends his former captain, Babar Azam, who is facing criticism for a form downturn and concerns over his place in the national team.
At a time when the Pakistan Super League (PSL) stage of the 10th season is ongoing, Umar Akmal became irritated by a guest during a recent podcast episode who suggested Babar Azam should not be included in the national team. The atmosphere quickly became tense as Akmal strongly backed the batter’s reputation and accomplishments.
“Can you say these words in front of him [Babar Azam]? Nobody knows you in Lahore, but the whole world knows who Babar Azam is. How could you say this?” Umar Akmal burst out, looking very upset.
Babar’s Recent Struggles
Babar Azam has faced criticism for a series of lacklustre performances. His form was noticeably lower in the recently concluded ICC Champions Trophy. Although there were some glimmers of recovery during New Zealand’s tour of Pakistan, he was still not consistent.
In the current season of PSL 10, Babar has been the leader of Peshawar Zalm,i but did not have the best performance either as captain or batter during the first phases. Peshawar lost their first two matches, and Babar himself only reached 0 and 1 in those games—an uncharacteristically low performance from a player of his caliber.
A Champion Under Pressure
Despite the flak, Babar Azam is surely one of the most effective and efficient batters that the country has produced in recent times. He is a man of few words; his leadership qualities and majestic batting display have earned him fans all over the globe.
While the argument about his national team position is still ongoing, the mention of stars such as Umar Akmal takes centre stage in Babar’s name, highlighting his old and tough career, which has earned him respect and adoration among players, even during difficult times.
So, with the T20 World Cup right around the corner and the Pakistani cricketing schedule loaded with events, it is Babar who will most likely be in the spotlight to regain his form and prove all the naysayers wrong.
