‘If RCB had won in first few years, there would…’: Sunil Gavaskar’s blunt take on deadly Bengaluru stampede

Hitting great and former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has talked about the Bengaluru stampede that took 11 lives while people celebrated with the RCB. Outside M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, thousands of fans came to celebrate their team’s first IPL title after waiting 18 long years. Gavaskar showed how much he felt about the incident and noted that the many years without a title made the moment more emotional than ever. If RCB had won the preceding days, the excitement about their match would not be as intense. He feels that the heat around RCB would have been lower if they had become champions in the early days of the IPL.

Given that the team lost in the early days, he noted that victory is now finally leading to significant public support. He pointed out that improper management and poor planning played an essential role in the disaster. The vast group trying to see their heroes and be part of the winners’ celebration caused a stampede at the stadium gates. There were also more than 50 people who suffered injuries in the crowd—condolences to RCB and Tribute to all Victims. While Gavaskar was thinking about RCB’s loss, he said he was glad to see their brilliant season throughout IPL 2025.

Throughout the campaign, as a commentator, he could see the team’s consistently excellent performance and strong will to persevere. After winning for the first time since 2003, their achievement brought immense happiness to fans and left a lasting mark on the franchise. The team’s fans gathered in large numbers to demonstrate their affection for them. People wanted to recognise the team and give them an emotional welcome, he stated. He shared his sympathy with the families, highlighting what should have been a joyful event that had turned into a cause of sadness. This is very sad indeed. It was supposed to be a time for joy rather than grief in this spirit of sports, Gavaskar said—people’s Reaction to RCB’s victory Parade. People have heavily criticised the team for holding their celebration the day after winning the game.

Many people claim that the tight timeline made it difficult for the administration and security forces to handle the crowd, which arrived in greater numbers than expected. The inadequate use of safety measures has attracted serious attention. To help, RCB declared that it will provide ₹10 lakhs to every family affected by the disaster. While this gesture is appreciated, more questions are being raised about the role of sports franchises in planning and managing public events. Vietnam Victory Was Overshadowed by the Tragedy. He ended by pointing out that the joy of RCB’s victory was cut short by something that could have been easily avoided. This demonstrates that individuals planning sports events must always be responsible for ensuring the safety of everyone. The hope is that fans, players, and everyone can remain both happy and safe in the future, thanks to lessons from what happened this year.
