Officials at the ECB said Jofra Archer won’t be able to play in the coming ODIs against the West Indies due to a right thumb problem. Starting at Edgbaston on 29 May, the series will be Harry Brook’s first as white-ball captain, including three ODIs and three T20Is. The ECB began reintroducing Archer to international cricket when he suffered this latest setback due to his recent injuries. The ECB has said that the medical team will examine Archer over the next two weeks to see when he might return. Scans showed his thumb injury could keep him out of the England Lions’ forthcoming red-ball match against India A that is set to begin on 6 June in Northampton. The 29-year-old had been kept out of the T20I series against the West Indies so he could play for the Lions to gain more experience. After playing his last Test in India last year, Archer has not participated in any first-class match in the past four years. The ECB wishes Archer to be a vital member of the England pace attack in Australia this winter, as they want to lift the Ashes trophy for the first time since 2010/11. Since Archer cannot play in the ODI squad, Lancashire left-arm pacer Luke Wood has been selected to join up for the series.
